413 Golf Weekend Primer: What fun events do you host or play in?
Plus, a look at the lovely Wahconah Country Club
Happy Friday people!
I hope you’re planning to play some golf this weekend. I’m participating in two cool events (weather-pending of course).
This afternoon, I’ll play in the first round of the Shaker Cup, which is a season-long two-man team event. It starts with a blind draw to match two members up to battle throughout the summer (if you’re lucky enough to advance). Most clubs have their own version of this — Springfield Cup at Springfield CC, Donald Ross Cup at Orchards, etc. — and they’re a blast.
What about your club? Are there long-standing, season-long events that rally the membership together? I’d love to hear about them and include information here in an upcoming newsletter. Let me know simply by replying!
On Saturday, I’m in a 27-hole, three-format Ryder Cup-style event organized by Gabe Crane, a faithful 413 Golf reader. Events like this are an awesome time with a mix of competition and shenanigans. What are some fun self-organized events you host or participate in each year? I’d also love to hear about them!
Before we dive into the rest of this week’s newsletter, please do me one favor. I’d love to get more people receiving this email weekly. Please consider sharing this with your playing buddies and passing along to your head pro or general manager to share with the club’s email list! Thank you!
Lastly, did you know you can also share information about the events or outings you run or play in? Submit via this simple form.

Featured 413 Golf Course
Western Massachusetts is home to so many highly-rated private clubs, popular public courses, and countless hidden gems. Each week, we’ll feature one of the many courses across the region. This week, get to know:
Wahconah Country Club
I absolutely love Wahconah Country Club. It’s a classic New England-style golf course that offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience, Wahconah’s layout is the work of Wayne Stiles (front nine) and John Van Kleek (back nine). The front offers open fairways, large greens, and impressive vistas while the back tightens up with narrower fairways and challenging, smaller greens.
It’s got some history, too. Bobby Jones played his last round of golf there in 1948. According to the course’s website, artist Rene Clarke’s rendered a portrait commemorating the event with a note from Bob Jones stating, “This was my last effort, sorry it wasn’t a better one – Bob Jones” was donated to the USGA. The only other copy of this portrait hangs in the Wahconah clubhouse.

Time since Jones’ final round has been quite kind to Wahconah and the course still offers quite the experience. Whether you opt for a weekend round or to try your luck in the the annual Little Brown Jug Invitational (being held this year Aug. 18-20), make sure you get out to Dalton at least once this season.
