413 Golf Weekend Recap: Wahconah Country Club, the site of Bobby Jones' final round

Plus, how to get news from your club, league, or outing in our newsletter!

Happy Tuesday, fam!

I hope you had a great weekend and found some time for your very own adult easter egg hunt Sunday at your local club. This week, we’re watching the weather yet again 🫣 but after Thursday’s predicted yuckiness, we’re gearing up for some good-looking forecasts. It’s so close, I can almost feel it!

Before we dive into today’s weekend primer, I want to share an easy way to send news and results for you, your club, your annual event, league, etc.

That’s it. Boom. Nice and easy.

If you run a league or represent one of the 413’s clubs, bookmark that bad boy. It’s an easy way to get your results into one of our newsletters. Please also consider passing it along to your pro shop to help spread the news about the great things taking place at your club.

OK, now here’s what we have cookin’ today:

  • Another look at the tournaments and outings you should get on your calendar ASAP

  • Course Maps, our first partner product!

  • A dive into the splendid Wahconah Country Club

  • Recommended reading from Bay State Golf

  • News and notes from this past weekend!

Hit ‘em long. Hit ‘em straight.

Today’s Partner Product

I’m excited to share the first partner product: Course Maps!

What one customer nicknamed, “The A-5 Wagyu of Dad gifts,” Course Maps offers gorgeous printed maps of any course in the world. They’ve got Augusta National, Spyglass Hill, Oakmont, and many more of the world’s most prestigious courses. But they’ll also do custom maps for your favorite courses in the 413.

As a partner product, Course Maps is giving 413 Golf subscribers 10% off their orders.

Just imagine how good Longmeadow CC, Crumpin-Fox, or your favorite track would look in this style!

Got any events you know of that should be shared with the community? Let us know by simply replying to this email and we’ll get it in Friday’s blast!

Western Massachusetts is home to so many highly-rated private clubs, popular public courses, and countless hidden gems. Each week, we’ll feature one of the many courses across the region. This week, get to know:

Wahconah Country Club

Simply put, Wahconah Country Club, located in Dalton, is a treat. I absolutely love this place.

A classic New England-style golf course that offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience, Wahconah’s layout is the work of Wayne Stiles (front nine) and John Van Kleek (back nine). The front offers open fairways, large greens, and impressive vistas while the back tightens up with narrower fairways and challenging, smaller greens.

It’s got some history, too. Bobby Jones played his last round of golf there in 1948. According to the course’s website, artist Rene Clarke’s rendered a portrait commemorating the event with a note from Bob Jones stating, “This was my last effort, sorry it wasn’t a better one – Bob Jones” was donated to the USGA. The only other copy of this portrait hangs in the Wahconah clubhouse.

Time since Jones’ final round has been quite kind to Wahconah and the course still offers quite the experience. Whether you opt for a weekend round or to try your luck in the 53rd annual Little Brown Jug Invitational (typically held in mid August), make sure you get out to Dalton at least once this season.

Every so often, I’ll share another newsletter I highly recommend reading. This week, check out Sean Melia and Bay State Golf. He does a great job chronicling all the best the Commonwealth’s golf world has to offer along with in-depth reviews of (soon enough) every course in the state. Check his work out below.

Bay State GolfI'm on a quest to play every golf course in Massachusetts. Join me as I share thoughts, news, and notes about the game I love.
